To start off our last day in Israel, we went to the Shuk in the Old City of Jerusalem to try our hands at bartering for souvenirs. Some fared better than others, but everyone walked away with something unique, from travel chess sets to Hebrew t-shirts that would certainly break patent law in the US.

As soon as I discovered that the law school offered overseas field classes, I was determined to go. I soon heard about this trip, which was devoted to two areas I had long been interested in: environmental law, and conflict resolution in Israel. After applying, fourteen other students and I were selected for this trip, ably guided by Professors Eckstein and Welsh, along with various affiliates of the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies.

Our first full day in Jerusalem was packed full of information and experiences. We started the day by meeting our tour guide, Jared Goldfarb, at our last hostel called The Post in the center of the city. He explained about the conservative dress code for the sacred areas of the Old City and ensured that both the men and women knew they needed to cover their arms and legs, and women should further cover their chests.

Having never been to Israel before, there was much on our group’s full agenda that filled me with excitement. One experience I looked forward to most, though, was our trip to the Dead Sea, and it did not disappoint! Located at the top of the list for tourists visiting Israel, this may not come as a surprise. However, in addition to floating in the Dead Sea, other things I saw and learned that day were interesting and enlightening.

Like many other students affected by COVID-19, I wanted to, but could not, travel abroad during college. I decided to make it one of my goals before graduating law school to go on one of Texas A&M’s field courses, and I am so glad I did.

May 15th began at Kibbutz Ketura, where we had arrived the day before. The day’s schedule would bring us well across the hyper-arid Arava Valley, but in the background lay an event that had loomed over every day in Israel. As was typical of our time in Israel, this event was characterized by diametrically different historical perspectives.

Day 7 started early for myself and a handful of my classmates. We elected to wake up around 5:30 AM to walk to Camel Mount, a nearby observation point we hoped would give us an unbeatable view of the sunrise. We followed the trail from our hostel, enjoying the view of the Ramon Crater and passing some of the Nubian mountain goats, or ibex, which roamed the area. Finally, we arrived at Camel Mount just before the sun came over the horizon, and sat in silence as it rose and colored the crater gold.

Ramon Crater

Our day started early on May 13th. We drove into the Ramon Crater and began our day with a short (hot) hike through the crater. Descending into the crater was epic–dizzying roads, massive cliff faces on all sides, and sporadic clumps of greenery marked our journey to our hiking spot. As we began our hike, I was struck by how massive the crater truly was compared to the small country of Israel.
