Texas A&M LAW Students Win Recent Advocacy Competitions

Texas A&M Law student teams recently brought home big wins in advocacy competitions.

A team of 2Ls, Angelika Anderson and Matthew Perez-McCurdy, won the region 11 rounds of the National Trial Competition, advancing to the national finals scheduled for the end of March in Fort Worth.

This is the first time a Texas A&M team has advanced to the national finals of this prestigious mock trial competition. The team was coached by local attorney Jim Hudson of the Tarrant County DA’s office.

Another team of 3Ls Aleena Farhat, Madison Feyrer-Melk and Ryan Madden finished as semi-finalists. They were coached by Justice Lee Gabriel. 

In January, the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) mock trial team won first place at the Constance Baker Motley Mock Trial Competition – Southwest Regional.

Team members were 3L Tiffany Daniels, and 2Ls Jasmine Jones, Kayla McCallum, and Ravyn Simmons. Ravyn Simmons also won the award for Best Advocate. The team was coached by Matthew Jackson (’13). 

The BLSA moot court team placed second and also won the award for Best Respondent’s Brief at the Thurgood Marshall Moot Court Competition – Southwest Regional. Team members were 2Ls Alexis Mielke and Janet Wyse. The team was coached by Nikki Chriesman-Green (’09).

These competition were originally scheduled to be in-person in Houston, going virtual just two days before the competition began. Both teams will advance to the national finals currently scheduled to be held in March in Memphis, Tennessee.

Late in the Fall semester, 3L Madison Feyrer-Melk won Best Advocate at the All Star National Mock Trial Competition. Other team members were 3Ls Aleena Farhat, Rebecca Jerome and Ryan Madden. The team was coached by Justice Lee Gabriel.

3L Travis Hammock won Outstanding Advocate at the Texas Showdown, sponsored by Tex-ABOTA. Other team members were 2Ls Angelika Anderson, Matthew Perez-McCurdy and Nina Scheffler. The team was coached by Jim Hudson.
